A lot of people are firm in their stance that home phone services are totally obsolete. They would advise you to drop the landline immediately. Or as Neal Frankle said in an article entitled “Do I Need a Land Line? No…and Neither Do You, “it makes no sense to have a telephone land line in my home anymore.” After noticing that he hardly used his landline, he reached out to his cellular provider to hear about how he could save money. He eventually came to the conclusion that he didn’t need one and that it wasn’t worth the cost.

A home phone service will cost you money that you might feel like you do not need to spend. This is a fair assessment for most people, especially young people who are short on cash and increasingly mobile. After all, if a person moves three times in three years and has a landline, he/she will have to change their landline account three times. If you have only a cell phone, that landline change is one less thing to worry about. Saving money though is a top reason people ditch their landline accounts. As the Washington Post reported, “In one of every five U.S. homes in the U.S., there is no traditional land-line telephone anymore, according to an Associated Press story by Alan Fram. And the share of households that relies only on a cell phone rose rapidly last year, driven in large part by household cost-cutting.”

Even Neal Frankle mentioned one reason to get or keep your home phone service. “This actually brings up the only reason anyone would keep a land line…security,” he wrote.  “In a natural disaster, the cell towers and internet may go down, but the land line will likely survive.” However, he was not convinced he still needed one. He asked, “Is that reason enough to keep a land line?” His answer was as follows, “The last time we had a natural disaster, the cell lines did go out, as did the electricity. But the land lines were overloaded anyway…so nothing worked for a few days.”

Although Neal Frankle might have had this experience, though, not everyone will. Sometimes landlines do work during a disaster, and if such a disaster happens you might be glad you have the landline. The Washington Post also weighed in on this question. “Reliable access to 911 emergency service is probably the most compelling argument for keeping a land line, but even that is becoming less of an issue. Pete Piringer, spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue, said most of the new cell phones have GPS technology that enables dispatchers to figure out where callers are.” However, the article continued with some ambivalence. “But the switch to the new technology is not complete, and they can have trouble tracing calls to an address if there’s a problem such as a dropped call, a dead battery or a caller who simply doesn’t know where he is. They have the same problem with internet-based phone services.”
