Long gone are the days of extremely slow internet. Almost all of us have moved past the dial-up phase, and most of us are now using an internet service provider that brings us quick internet. So is that all we can do? If we want the fastest internet, do we just need to seek out the best internet provider and then call it good? Or is there anything else we can do to help speed up our internet?
Choosing the right internet service provider is by no means the only thing you can do to speed up your internet. It may be the first thing you should look into, and it will probably make the most difference with speeding up your internet. But if you’ve already found a high quality, quick speed internet service provider, there are a few extra things you can do that can also help give you more speed.
Here are 5 tricks for making your internet even faster:
1. Try out a new router.
One thing that makes a huge difference in internet speed is the modem or router you are using. If you are using an old, outdated, or low quality modem or router, that will drag down your internet speeds significantly. So, if you feel your internet speeds aren’t what they should be, your first culprit could be your modem or router.
Having an updated, high quality modem can improve your internet speeds, as well as minimizing or eliminating drop outs. On top of that, you will want to make sure you are using a modem that is suited for your specific internet plan and provider.
2. Virus scan.
Viruses are another thing that can really slow down your internet. So, make sure that you do regular virus scans, and have a good anti-virus software installed. This will help to prevent and catch potential viruses that could be slowing your computer down drastically.
3. Check your software.
Some softwares can slow down your internet. If you’re noticing slow speeds, you may want to take a look at the software you are running. Try turning off any software that you suspect may be slowing things down for you, and see if your speeds improve. It will obviously be up to you to decide which software is more important to you than the speeds you may want… they may be slowing you down, but you may also find them necessary.
4. Check for interference.
There are a lot of things that can interfere with the speed of your internet. Things like specific types of cordless phones, certain cable TV boxes, even speakers, smartphones, and iPads could all cause interference and slow your internet connection down. So, try getting new types of these items (if it’s a phone or cable box) or move these items out of the way (if it’s an iPad, etc) and see if your speeds improve.
5. Turn it off.
When you’re having problems with any type of electrical device, how many times have you heard the suggestion, “have you tried turning it off?” It may seem like an overused suggestion… but that is because it works. Every so often, you should turn off your computer completely and let it sit for a couple minutes. This can help it reset itself in many ways that can improve your speed.
